About 90 minutes south of Boise, Craters of the Moon is one of Idaho's most otherworldly destinations. The landscape looks like something from another planet—vast fields of black lava rock stretching as far as the eye can see. Spring is the perfect time to visit because the weather is mild, and you'll avoid the intense summer heat that makes walking across the lava fields uncomfortable.
The drive from Boise to Craters of the Moon is straightforward, mostly on US-20, but once you get there, you'll want to explore the loop road and hike some of the trails. The park has excellent facilities and plenty of places to stop and take in the views. Just make sure your vehicle is in good condition before you go—it's a remote area, and you don't want to break down far from help.
The Sawtooth Mountains and Stanley
If you're looking for true mountain scenery, head north from Boise toward Stanley. The drive up Highway 21 is absolutely spectacular, especially in spring when the snow is melting and the wildflowers are just starting to bloom. The road winds through the mountains, offering breathtaking views at every turn.
Stanley itself is a charming mountain town with excellent restaurants, shops, and outdoor recreation opportunities. From there, you can explore the Sawtooth Valley, hike to pristine alpine lakes, or simply enjoy the peaceful mountain atmosphere. The drive is about two hours from Boise, and it's one of our favorite spring road trips. Just be aware that mountain roads can be narrow and winding, so take your time and enjoy the drive.
Bruneau Dunes State Park
About 75 miles south of Boise near the town of Bruneau, you'll find Bruneau Dunes State Park—a hidden gem that many Idahoans don't even know about. The park features massive sand dunes rising 470 feet above the surrounding desert, creating a landscape that feels completely different from anywhere else in Idaho.
Spring is an excellent time to visit because the temperatures are comfortable for hiking and exploring. The park has a small lake for fishing, hiking trails of varying difficulty, and stunning views of the surrounding high desert. It's a relatively short drive from Boise, making it perfect for a day trip or weekend getaway.
Payette Lake and McCall
Head west from Boise toward McCall, and you'll find yourself in one of Idaho's most charming mountain towns. Payette Lake is the centerpiece, offering beautiful views and plenty of outdoor activities. In spring, the lake is perfect for fishing, and the surrounding mountains are just starting to green up.
McCall is about 90 minutes from Boise, and the drive is scenic without being too challenging. The town has excellent restaurants, shops, and lodging options. If you're looking for a more relaxed spring road trip where you can enjoy small-town charm and mountain scenery, McCall is an excellent choice.
